Royalties
Payments linked to the use of music rights, calculated and distributed under applicable arrangements.
Definition
Music royalties are payments arising from the exploitation of compositions, recordings or certain related rights under applicable licences, laws and contracts. Who receives them, how they are calculated and when they are paid depend on the right involved and the arrangements governing that use.
Identify the right before tracing the payment
Calling every music payment a royalty can hide important differences. A live appearance fee pays for an engagement, while a recording royalty may arise under a recording agreement. A songwriter's income can relate to the composition even when somebody else performs it. Begin with the asset being used, the relevant right and the agreement or collection route that connects the use to a recipient.
One person can receive several categories because they hold several roles. An independent songwriter who also owns a recording may have composition and master interests, but those interests still require separate records. Publishing concerns the composition. Recording ownership, performer entitlements and contractual artist participation are different questions, even when they all relate to the same song title.
Understand the main royalty categories
| Category | What it concerns | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Composition performance | Relevant public performance or communication of the underlying work | Not the same payment as the performer's live appearance fee. |
| Composition mechanical | Relevant reproduction or distribution of the underlying work | Digital treatment and administration differ between markets and services. |
| Master income | Licensed exploitation of a particular sound recording | The recording owner's receipts differ from an artist's contractual share. |
| Related or neighbouring rights | Certain uses involving performers and recording producers | Eligibility, protected uses and collection systems vary by territory. |
| Sync licensing income | Agreed audiovisual use of compositions or recordings | An upfront licence payment may coexist with other income where applicable. |
These categories are a working map, not a promise that every use produces every payment. A platform, broadcaster or venue may interact with different rights through different licences. Some receipts are paid directly under a negotiated contract; others pass through collecting organizations or administrators. Descriptions on statements may not use identical terminology, so investigate the underlying use rather than relying on the label alone.
Follow the collection and accounting chain
A usage event and an artist payment are rarely the same accounting event. Information may move from a service to a distributor, label, publisher, administrator or collecting organization before reaching an individual. Each route has its own reporting periods, corrections and contractual deductions. A delay therefore needs to be traced through the relevant chain rather than attributed automatically to the company nearest the artist.
Confirm which representative handles which rights and territories. Overlapping appointments can create conflicting claims, while gaps may leave a use outside the expected administration. When changing representatives, establish who handles historical periods and late receipts. An apparently missing payment can belong to an earlier accounting period still administered by a previous representative.
A distribution agreement should explain the recording revenue it covers. Do not extend that explanation to publishing or performer collections unless the relevant services and authority are actually included.
Read statements as evidence, not just totals
Start by checking the reporting period, currency, source, territory and identity of the work or recording. Then compare gross receipts, the contractual calculation basis, deductions and the resulting amount payable. An artist percentage applied to a defined royalty base is not necessarily a percentage of everything a platform earns. Where recoupment applies, distinguish income credited to an account from cash currently payable.
- Match recording entries to titles, versions and identifiers rather than titles alone.
- Check whether negative entries reverse earlier reporting or correct a previous allocation.
- Separate withholding, exchange adjustments and contractual charges instead of combining them into an unexplained difference.
- Keep statements and payment confirmations together so reported earnings can be reconciled with actual receipts.
- Ask for clarification using specific rows, dates and agreement clauses rather than a general claim that the total looks low.
An ISRC code helps identify a recording, but it does not establish composition ownership or determine somebody's royalty entitlement by itself.
Example: one Abu Dhabi artist, several income routes
Imagine an Abu Dhabi artist releasing an original recording and later performing the song at a Dubai event. The artist receives an agreed appearance fee for the event. Recording uses may be reported through the distributor, while relevant composition uses may follow a separate administration route. The event fee should not be entered as evidence that all composition or recording payments have been settled.
The artist then receives a statement containing a recording entry but no corresponding composition entry. Rather than assuming an error, the team checks whether the statements cover the same period, rights and territories. They review registrations and representation before making an enquiry. The absence of an entry on one statement does not prove that another organization has failed to account.
A simple rights map makes this investigation manageable: identify the recording owner, writers, representatives, reporting sources and expected statement locations for each category.
Plan around uncertainty without ignoring income
Use actual statements and contractual terms for planning rather than a universal payment per stream. Different uses, services, territories and agreements can produce different outcomes. Historical receipts can support a cautious forecast, but they do not establish a guaranteed future amount. Keep unresolved claims separate from confirmed receivables and allow for reporting delays.
Assign responsibility for reviewing statements and following up discrepancies. A recurring review can identify missing versions, incorrect shares or unexplained deductions before records become difficult to retrieve. Preserve correspondence and correction references so an enquiry has a clear history. The goal is a traceable account of entitlement and payment, not an assumption that every visible play must generate an identical return.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one standard royalty rate per stream?
No universal rate applies across all services, rights, territories and agreements. A quoted average cannot reliably predict an individual artist's payment. Review the actual reporting source and contractual calculation instead.
Are live performance fees royalties?
Usually they are treated as payment for the engagement rather than the same income category as composition royalties. Relevant performance-related rights may also arise, but their administration is separate from negotiating the artist's appearance fee.
Why can royalties arrive after the music was used?
Usage reporting, matching, licensing and accounting take place on different schedules. Corrections and cross-border administration can add further stages. Check the relevant reporting timetable before deciding a payment is overdue.
Does owning a master mean owning the publishing?
No. The master is the recording, and publishing concerns the composition. Ownership of one does not automatically create ownership of the other, even when a single artist performs and releases the song.
Can an artist earn royalties but receive no current payment?
Yes, depending on the agreement. Credited royalties may be applied against a recoupable balance or subject to payment conditions. The statement should distinguish earnings, adjustments, balances and amounts currently payable.
